Often in football you hear about teamwork, especially as it refers to tactics on the field of play.

The players have different skills and attributes which make them better suited to some positions on the pitch than others. Some make better goalkeepers, others defenders, others strikers. All work together for the benefit of the team.

The bible too speaks about teamwork. In the New Testament we read about teamwork within the church. The clearest explanation is given by the apostle Paul in his letters to the churches in Rome and Corinth.(Romans 12: 3-8 and 1 Corinthians 12: 12-31.) In his descriptions, Paul likens the church to a body.

In 1 Corinthians the church is referred to as the body of Christ. It is important to notice that whenever the bible refers to ‘the church’ it never speaks about a building, but always speaks about people.

Paul speaks about different people having differing types of ‘gifts‘. All people within the body are encouraged to use whatever ‘gift’ that they have, for the benefit of the others.

How does this affect Fellowship Football?

Because Fellowship Football is an outworking of church life, it inherently contains characteristics of the church.

The teams which represent different churches in Fellowship Football represent different parts of the body of Christ.

At an organisational level, the success of Fellowship Football is dependant upon the harmonious working together of team overseers, assistants and players.

The success of Fellowship Football depends upon everyone positively working together to encourage one another and build each other up. The greatest damage to any activity comes from schisms, bickering and voices of discouragement coming from within.

In a match, there needs to be a level of maturity shown by the players from both the teams taking part. It is the people who display this level of maturity that are the ‘glue ‘that holds Fellowship Football together, for the benefit of the rest. Without them Fellowship Football couldn’t exist.

Four goals from Dan Goodwin helped Icthus cruise to a convincing 8 nil win over Stour Valley Vineyard. The victory means that Icthus now leapfrog Eden’s to go top of Division One. Icthus other scorers were Ben Hyden 2, Will Martin and Calum Macintyre.

New Church, winners of last seasons wooden spoon have turned their fortunes around this term. A 7-1 routing of Town Pastors has booked them a place in the Division Two Play-off Final. Joe Reader 2, Calum Farrow, Ben Webb, Jonny Gallagher and Barney O’Connell were the men on target for New Church. Whilst Elliot Pinkham scored the Town Pastors consolation goal.

Sudbury Baptist came out on top in a close encounter with Churches Together. The end to end match was played in a great spirit. Two good goals from Ryan Fordham and a Sam Thackeray separated the sides. The 2 nil defeat for Churches Together places them bottom of the table.

Teamwork

Ian played his last game of the season on 23rd April against old rivals Icthus (and scored!).

On May 7th, Ian Witcombe (Aircraft Tech, Corporal 4 Regiment Witcombe) of Monks Hadleigh leaves from Wattisham Airfield for Afghanistan for his second Tour of Duty in this notorious trouble spot.

It seems only a couple of weeks since he came home from his recent Tour to Libya and Oman during the business with the Colonel.

Ian has been in the military since he was 16 when he began his training as a helicopter Technician. In time he qualified with the Apache helicopters and it will be with these aircraft that he will once again be travelling to Afghanistan.

If you can spare some time, Ian would love to hear from you while he is away. He will set up an e-bluey account and people can register and write emails, send photos etc which are then printed off and put in his mailbox. It is also possible to send packages to Ian at no cost (up to a certain weight). Please ask Peter Messenger if you want the address for this or for his e-bluey account.

On behalf of the League I’d like to thank Ian and his comrades for the sacrifice that they are making on our behalf and assure him that we shall be thinking of him and praying for the safe return of them all.

Anyone who would like to write to Ian can contact Peter Messenger by email at pukkapete@btinternet.com and he will give you the contact details on how to reach him.

Antony Reed, Team Overseer for the Vineyard is hoping to raise some funds for the St James Place Foundation.

The focus of the Foundation is on helping children and young people who have special needs and supporting the hospice movement throughout the UK.

Antony will faces the daunting task of walking 50 miles in 24 hours starting from Windsor Castle at 2 pm on Saturday 26th May. He then has until 2pm the following day to make it to the finish line at Buckingham Palace.

Antony says “Despite considering myself quite sporty I have started training and it is beginning to dawn on me that walking at a steady speed of just over 2mph for 50 miles will be quite a challenge indeed!”

If you would like to support Antony, you can sponsor him by visiting his fund raising page. Link below;
